A gabion basket is a rectangular wire mesh box made from a hexagonal double-twisted steel wire mesh, further reinforced with a thicker wire edge running around the edges and transverse diaphragms. These mesh boxes are delivered to the site folded, after which they are assembled, lifted into place and filled with durable stone. The modular nature of gabion means that it can be used in a wide range of applications and configurations.
A gabion is a cage, cylinder or box filled with stones, concrete or sometimes sand and soil, for use in civil engineering, road construction, military applications and landscaping. Gabion structures with stone infill are used to control erosion. Cylindrical metal structures are used for dams or foundation construction. In a military context, gabions filled with earth or sand are used to protect engineers, infantry and artillerymen from enemy fire.
Material
Made from high quality low carbon steel iron wire, thick zinc coated wire, PVC coated wire by machine twisting and braiding, and Galfan coated wire. Galfan is a highly efficient galvanizing process using a zinc/aluminum/misch metal alloy coating. This provides significantly better protection than traditional galvanizing. Where the product is exposed to water flows or salt environments, we strongly recommend a polymer coating on the galvanized block for extended design life.
